Epsom garage, the home of Epsom Coaches since 1971 is to close in June 2021, with the loss of many engineering and support jobs. RATP Group who now own the site, are moving the remaining bus routes to other garages and transferring some to another operator.
The garage opened on the then newly established Longmead Industrial Estate, after Epsom Coaches left their long time home in South Street, Epsom. Purpose built, the premises were state of the art and housed the then 30 strong, Epsom Coaches fleet. Further expansion of the site followed over the years, with enlargement of the garage building in 1979 to accommodate ever longer coaches and the building of a new twin bay body shop and additional parking. In 2010, the site was redeveloped and expanded further, creating first class facilities for staff and the fleet to hotel standards. At peak, the fleet reached 150 buses and coaches, but since the demise of Epsom Coaches in June 2017 has sadly diminished to become a shadow of its former self and consisting almost wholly of London buses.
In the 50th anniversary year of the garage opening, it is sad to see the facility which is the envy of the industry, close. Its future is not known at this stage.
