On Friday 11th June 2010, Roy Richmond MBE, Chairman of Epsom Coaches Group, formally opened Epsom’s new garage after 12 months of construction, during which the company’s operation continued around the building works. Roy sadly died in January of the following year, but lived to see the future for the company, replacing the 1971 garage that he had masterminded and then state of the art, as was the new facility, proudly standing the test of time, although sadly now not housing the iconic Epsom Coaches fleet.
The opening ceremony was attended by over 200 VIP guests, who enjoyed a tour of the new facility, previewing the public open day due to be held on the following day. Finally, gathered in the cavernous workshop building and following a video depicting the proud history of the company and speeches from the founders grandson, Andrew Richmond and Commercial Director Steve Whiteway, Roy Richmond, son of the founder of the business, formally unveiled a commemorative plaque. The plaque read:
This plaque commemorates the opening of a new operating centre for the 21st Century and marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of Epsom Coaches, by H.R.Richmond in 1920

On the day, our guest of honour was the Senior Traffic Commissioner for the UK, Phillip Brown, who kindly presented certificates to staff and himself received a model of a Quality Line bus following his inspiring speech to those gathered. Epsom & Ewell’s Mayor, Clr Clive Smitheram was also in attendance.
There is no doubt this was a momentous day in the company’s long history, proudly demonstrating its leading role in the UK bus and coach industry, always alive with innovation and significant investment for the future. 10 years on, that day is fondly remembered by all who attended and a landmark in the history of the borough of Epsom & Ewell.
Our camera captured the day, please see “At Work and Play” “Special Occasions” 2010, for all the photographs.
